Dr. Caroline Maykut, PhD, C.Psych

Dr. Caroline Maykut has been involved in research, teaching, and clinical practice related to sexuality for several years. She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where her research focused on sexual desire. She then completed two postdoctoral fellowships – one in Rural Health Psychology with Norton Sound Health Corporation in Nome, Alaska, and another in Clinical Sexuality at the Institute for Sexual and Gender Health (ISGH) at the University of Minnesota Medical School. At the ISGH, she received specialized training in Sex Therapy, Compulsive Sexual Behavior, and Transgender Health.

Dr. Maykut enjoys working with people of all sexualities and genders in individual and relationship therapy. She is affirming and knowledgeable of LGBTQ+, poly/ENM, and kink identities. Her therapeutic approach is warm, engaged, collaborative, and evidence-based. She has been trained in multiple therapeutic approaches, including Emotion-Focused Therapy for individuals and relationships, Cognitive therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, and somatic approaches. She draws on these modalities according to the needs and goals of her clients. Her goal is to help clients develop insight and awareness into their current concerns and work actively towards meaningful change.

Dr. Maykut works with a wide variety of sexual concerns, including but not limited to: concerns related to sexual desire (low desire, discrepancy in desire level or erotic interest between partners), orgasm, sexual pain, shame related to sexuality or sexual expression, and working through difficult or traumatic sexual experiences. She also has a special interest in working with those who are exploring their sexuality or gender, or who are looking for support through gender transition. She believes that healthy sexuality is about more than just the absence of “dysfunction,” and takes a sex-positive and pleasure-focused approach to building sexual self-esteem and intimacy. She believes that sexuality cannot be separated from other aspects of our lives and identities, and takes a “whole person” approach to sex therapy. As a broadly trained clinician in adult mental health, she is also equipped to work with mental health concerns (e.g. anxiety, posttraumatic stress, ADHD) that impact individual, relational, and sexual health.

Dr. Maykut is committed to ongoing professional development and maintaining current with best practices in the field. She is an Executive Council member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR), and a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). She continues to contribute to research and scholarship in the areas of sexuality and gender.
